New York State Inspection in Port Jefferson Station

Family Automotive Center is a New York State licensed inspection station serving Port Jefferson Station and the North Shore. Whether you need an annual safety and emissions inspection, a re-inspection after a repair, or you just bought a used vehicle and want to make sure it’ll pass — we’ve got you. Most inspections are completed in 30 minutes or less, and walk-ins are welcome.

Don’t put it off. Driving with an expired inspection sticker in New York can get you a ticket, and if you’re stopped, the fine is more than the inspection itself.

Safety inspection covers

  • Brakes — pads, rotors, lines, parking brake.
  • Steering, front-end, and suspension.
  • Tires and wheels — tread depth, condition, sidewalls.
  • Headlights, brake lights, signal lights, license plate light.
  • Windshield wipers and washer.
  • Horn.
  • Mirrors.
  • Seat belts.
  • Fuel system integrity.
  • Body and chassis (rust-through that affects safety).

Emissions inspection covers

  • OBD-II readiness monitors must be set.
  • Check engine light must be off.
  • Gas cap pressure test (older vehicles).
  • Visual emissions equipment check (catalytic converter, EVAP system, etc.).

What if my vehicle fails?

You leave with a written list of exactly what failed and why. Have us fix it (most are same-day repairs and we’ll re-inspect for free), or take it elsewhere and bring it back within the allowed window with proof of repair.

Common reasons cars fail NY inspection

  • Check engine light on (most common emissions failure).
  • Worn brake pads — below NY’s minimum thickness.
  • Tire tread below 2/32″ or visible cord/sidewall damage.
  • Cracked windshield in the wiper sweep area or driver’s view.
  • Burnt-out bulbs — including license plate light, which gets missed often.
  • Damaged or non-functional wipers.
  • Loose or worn ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links.
  • Exhaust leaks ahead of the catalytic converter.
  • Visible rust holes in the rocker panels, frame, or floor.
  • Recently had the battery disconnected — readiness monitors haven’t reset yet.

Pre-purchase or pre-inspection check

Buying a used car? Bring it to us BEFORE you sign anything. We’ll run the same checks a state inspection would — and catch problems the seller may not even know about. It’s the cheapest peace of mind you can buy.

Already bought it and worried it won’t pass? Bring it in for a pre-inspection. We’ll tell you exactly what needs to be addressed, with no obligation to repair here.

Why Family Automotive Center for inspections?

  • NY State licensed inspection station — official safety and emissions in-house.

  • Same-day repair & re-inspect on most failures.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a NY State inspection cost?

NY State sets the maximum inspection fee, which varies based on vehicle weight class. Call 631-923-2358 for the current price for your vehicle.

How long does an inspection take?

Usually 20–30 minutes if everything passes. Longer if we need to test specific systems or run an emissions readiness drive cycle.

What do I need to bring?

Just your vehicle, registration, and ID. That’s it.

My check engine light is on — can I still get inspected?

You can be inspected, but you will fail emissions if the light is on. We can diagnose, repair, and re-inspect — often the same day. Call ahead so we can plan the visit.

I just had my battery replaced. Will I pass emissions?

Maybe not. Disconnecting the battery resets the OBD-II readiness monitors, and several of them need to “set” through normal driving (highway, city, cold start) before the car can be inspected. If the monitors aren’t set, we’ll tell you exactly what kind of driving you need to do, and you can come back.

Do you inspect motorcycles and trailers?

Call us at 631-923-2358 and tell us what you have — we’ll tell you whether we’re equipped for it.
