Check Engine Light & Computer Diagnostics in Port Jefferson Station, NY

Is your check engine light on? Don’t ignore it, and don’t let just any shop guess at it. At Family Automotive Center in Port Jefferson, we run full computer diagnostics with dealer-level scan tools that read every system on your vehicle — engine, transmission, ABS, airbags, emissions, body control, and more. We don’t just clear the code. We find the root cause and fix it.

A check engine light has more than a hundred possible triggers, from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter. Generic auto-parts-store scanners only read the most basic codes — and even those, they often misinterpret. Our diagnostic process pulls live data, freeze-frame snapshots, and manufacturer-specific codes most shops can’t even see.

What our diagnostic service covers

  • Check engine light (CEL / MIL) — solid or flashing, we find it.
  • ABS / traction control / stability light — wheel speed sensors, ABS module, brake pressure issues.
  • Airbag / SRS light — seat belt sensors, clock springs, impact sensors, module faults.
  • Transmission warning lights — shift solenoids, speed sensors, fluid temperature, internal faults.
  • Drivability complaints — rough idle, hesitation, stalling, hard starting, surging, misfires.
  • Performance loss — power loss, poor fuel economy, limp mode, “reduced engine power” message.
  • Emissions / smog test failures — including readiness monitors that won’t set.
  • Battery drain & electrical gremlins — parasitic draws, intermittent faults, communication errors.
  • Pre-purchase inspections — buying a used car? We’ll scan every module before you sign anything.

Warning signs — call today, not next month

  • Flashing check engine light — active misfire. Pull over and call us.
  • Engine running rough, vibrating at idle, or shaking under load.
  • Sudden drop in fuel economy.
  • Smell of rotten eggs, fuel, or burning oil.
  • Black, white, or blue smoke from the exhaust.
  • Transmission slipping, banging into gear, or refusing to shift.
  • Multiple warning lights on at once.

How our diagnostic process works

  1. Listen first. What does the car do? When? How often? The story tells us where to look.
  2. Full system scan. We pull codes from every module on the vehicle, not just the engine.
  3. Live data analysis. Sensor readings under real driving conditions tell us if the code is the cause or just a symptom.
  4. Targeted testing. Where the data points, we test the actual component — fuel pressure, compression, smoke tests, electrical signal verification.
  5. Written estimate. You get a clear explanation of what’s wrong, what it costs to fix, and whether it’s safe to drive in the meantime.

We never recommend a repair we haven’t confirmed. “Replace the part the code points at and hope” is how cars come back to a shop three times.

Why Family Automotive Center for diagnostics?

  • Dealer-level scan tools covering domestic, Asian, and European vehicles.
  • ASE-certified diagnostic technicians who train on the latest systems every year.
  • Manufacturer service information — we read the same TSBs the dealer reads.
  • Honest results — if it’s a $20 fix, that’s what we tell you. If it’s a $2,000 fix, we’ll show you the data so you understand why.
  • Diagnostic charge applied to repair if you have us do the work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a diagnostic cost?

Our standard diagnostic fee is in line with shop labor rates in Suffolk County. Call 631-923-2358 for current pricing. The fee typically applies to the labor on whatever repair you authorize — so if you have us do the fix, you’re effectively only paying for the actual repair.

Why does AutoZone do it for free?

A free code-reader scan reads the most basic generic codes only. It doesn’t pull live data, manufacturer-specific codes, freeze-frame information, or codes from non-engine modules. Treating that printout as a diagnosis is how many drivers end up paying for parts they didn’t actually need.

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

Solid light: usually safe to drive a short distance to the shop, but get it checked soon. Flashing light: stop driving as soon as it’s safe. A flashing CEL almost always means a misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter — a $1,500–$3,000 part — within minutes of continued driving.

Will my car pass NY State inspection with the light on?

No. NY State emissions inspection requires the check engine light to be off and all readiness monitors to be set. We’ll diagnose, repair, and re-inspect — often the same day.

What if you can't replicate the problem?

Intermittent issues are real, and we don’t pretend we always catch them on the first visit. We’ll log freeze-frame data, install a flight-recorder if needed, and ask you to bring it back when the problem happens. We’d rather take a second look than guess at parts.
