Heating, A/C & Engine Cooling Service in Port Jefferson Station, NY

A working A/C in July and a working heater in January aren’t luxuries on Long Island — they’re necessities. And the engine cooling system that keeps your car from overheating in summer or freezing in winter is one of the most overlooked maintenance items there is.

Family Automotive Center handles all three: vehicle A/C, heating, and engine cooling. From a quick A/C recharge to a heater core replacement, radiator swap, or full coolant flush, we diagnose the actual problem (not just the symptom) and quote the fix in writing.

Air conditioning

  • A/C diagnosis & performance test.
  • A/C recharge (R-134a and R-1234yf).
  • Refrigerant leak detection (UV dye and electronic).
  • Compressor, condenser, evaporator replacement.
  • Expansion valve / orifice tube replacement.
  • A/C lines, hoses, and seal replacement.
  • Cabin air filter replacement.
  • Blower motor and resistor replacement.
  • A/C odor elimination & evaporator cleaning.

Heating

  • Heater core diagnosis & replacement.
  • Heater control valve service.
  • Blend door actuator repair (the “thump-thump” from behind the dash).
  • HVAC control head and electronic climate control diagnosis.

Engine cooling

  • Coolant flush & refill.
  • Radiator replacement.
  • Thermostat replacement.
  • Water pump replacement.
  • Cooling fan and fan clutch service.
  • Hose and clamp replacement.
  • Pressure testing for leaks.
  • Overheating diagnosis (head gasket vs. coolant leak vs. circulation).

Warning signs you need A/C, heating, or cooling service

  • A/C blows warm or only mildly cool.
  • A/C blows cold then warm intermittently.
  • Musty or mildew smell when A/C turns on.
  • Weak airflow even at max fan speed.
  • Heater blows cold or barely warm.
  • Sweet smell inside the cabin (often a heater core leak).
  • Foggy windshield that doesn’t clear with defrost.
  • Engine temperature gauge climbing in traffic or on hills.
  • Coolant smell, visible coolant leak, or low coolant.
  • Heater works at highway speed but not at idle.
  • White steam from under the hood — pull over immediately.

Why A/C systems fail

A/C is a sealed system. It shouldn’t lose refrigerant under normal use. If your A/C is weak, refrigerant has leaked out somewhere — through a worn shaft seal on the compressor, a corroded condenser, a deteriorated O-ring, or a punctured line. Just adding more refrigerant doesn’t fix the leak; it just delays the next time you’ll need to recharge.

We use UV dye and electronic leak detection to find the actual leak, then quote the proper repair so it stays cold for years, not weeks.

Why your cooling system needs flushing

Engine coolant breaks down chemically over time. The corrosion-inhibiting additives degrade, the pH drifts, and old coolant becomes increasingly aggressive toward aluminum (water pump, radiator, head, block) and rubber (hoses, gaskets).

A neglected cooling system causes problems that look like other things — stuck thermostats, scaled-up radiators, eaten-out water pump impellers, and even head gasket failures. A $150 coolant flush every few years prevents thousands in repairs.

Why Family Automotive Center for HVAC?

  • EPA-certified A/C technicians — required by law to handle modern refrigerants properly.
  • Both R-134a and R-1234yf equipment — we service older and brand-new vehicles.
  • Real diagnosis, not “just add freon” — we find the leak.
  • Cooling system pressure testing on every overheating diagnosis.
  • 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on most repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an A/C recharge cost?

If the system just needs a top-off (no leak), recharges are usually under a couple hundred dollars. If there’s a leak, you’re paying twice — once for the recharge and again for the repair. We always recommend leak diagnosis first if your A/C has been progressively weakening.

Why does my heater blow cold sometimes and hot other times?

Common causes: air in the cooling system, a stuck thermostat, low coolant level, a failing water pump, or a blend door actuator stuck on the cold side. We’ll narrow it down quickly.

What's the smell when I turn on the A/C?

Usually mold or bacteria growing on a wet evaporator core. We can clean it (often resolves the smell completely) and replace your cabin air filter at the same time.

Is it safe to drive with my engine running hot?

No. Even brief overheating warps heads, blows head gaskets, and ruins thousands of dollars of engine. If your temp gauge is climbing, pull over and call us — we’ll talk you through what to check.

How often should I flush my coolant?

Depends on the coolant type. OAT (organic acid) and HOAT (hybrid) coolants typically last 5 years / 100,000+ miles. Older green IAT coolant should be flushed every 2 years or 30,000 miles. We’ll check what’s in your car and recommend accordingly.
